When onions are sliced, cells in it were damaged. Exit the named compound that reacts with the sulfenic acid enzyme and produce a gas called Propanethiol S-oxide. If the gas enters the eye and is mixed with water in it, it forms sulfuric acid.

Presence of sulfuric acid makes the eyes sore, causing us to cry. When cooked, the enzyme becomes inactive and finally eyes return to normal conditions.

Slicing onions near or in the water

This method of utilizing the theory that gases produced onions can react with water nearby, not the one in the eye. Unfortunately, slicing onions in water would risk injuring the hand. While slicing onions near running water is clearly a form of waste.

Refrigerate onions

Cool the onions, without freezing, could slow spending of sour onions. Leave enough onions in the freezer 10-15 minutes in the fridge before slicing.

Wear swimming goggles

Actually there are special glasses for peeling and slicing onions. However, use of swimming goggles also does not hurt when slicing onions to avoid tears. Although it looks strange because cooking by wearing swimming goggles, but it does not hurt to try right?
